INTERVIEW WITH GRANPARENTS

GRANDMA JIMENEZ INTERVIEW

ME: When and where were you born?

GRANDMA: I was born in Silver City, New Mexico (then Santa Clara) in January 24th 1925.

Me: What was it like in Silver City during the Depression?

GRANDMA: The economy was mainly ranchers. I did not go hungry ,but the Depression was there.

Me: What about your family?

GRANDMA: My family still lives in Silver city till this day.

ME: How were you effected by World War II? 

GRANDMA: In 1944 i went to the University of Houston for nursing. We all ended up treating a lot of soilders with malaria and many men who had to undergo amputations.

ME: Where did you meet up with grandpa after he returned from the war?

GRANDMA: San Diego.

Me: Did you lose anyone close to you during the war?

GRANDMA: I lost six relatives.

Me: When and where were you born?

GRANDPA: Silver City then Santa Clara, New Mexico in February 15 1924.

Me: How were you effected by the Great Depression?

GRANDPA: I was thirteen at the time of the Depression. I lived with my sister at the time we got help from WPA and CC camps which trained for government work, public works, and forestry.

Me: How were you effected by WW II?

GRANDPA: I volunteered for th Navy in 1942. I thought it was better to be in the Navy because the army i heard was really rough. I enlisted in Santa Fe and went to San Diego for basic training. I wa assigned to the U.S.S Idaho after i was sent to San Francisco six months later. I was encharge of gun emplacement 5th division. I was their aboard for nine invasions

GUAM
TARAWA
The U.S.S Idaho was torpedoed by kamakazies at IWO JIMA because we provided aircraft carriers.
ALEUTIAN ISLANDS which the Japanese took, but not for very long. I was gone only for five years.

ME: Did anyone you know join the war?

GRANDPA: Just about everybody had to join. There were no men left in town they all went to war. I lost close friends , but the nine friends i signed up with made it back just like i did.

ME: What did you do after your military duty?

GRANDPA: I helped my brother in Silver City, New Mexicoin the grocery business. Then your grandmother and I came to San Antonio and I worked at Kelly Airforce base for 34 years. 

Me: when did you marry Grandma?

GRANDPA: December 25th 1947. Then we had your Aunts Sylvia 1948 and Barbra 1953, your mother Bernice 1958 and your aunt Annette 1963. Are only two sons died in infancy.
